Jimmy M. Ross of Quitaque, Texas, USA, was elected as President of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association’s 89th International Convention, held in Boston, USA June 30th to July 4th 2006.
President Ross is a retired judge and businessman.
A Lion since 1969, President Ross is a member of the Quitaque Lions Club. President Ross has held many offices within the association, including club president, lieutenant district governor, multiple district secretary, state membership & extension chairperson, multiple district convention chairperson, multiple district council chairperson and international director. Additionally he has taken part in eyeglass recycling missions to South America and was involved in chartering more than 400 clubs. He was a speaker at seven forums and seven international conventions.
In recognition of his service to the association he has received numerous awards, including two District Governor Appreciation Awards, seven International President’s Awards and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor bestowed upon association members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.
In addition to his Lions activities, President Ross is active in numerous professional and community organizations. He was elected to the board of directors of Water Control & Improvement, district board of directors of Lighthouse Elect Co-op, chairperson of board of 911 Emergency Systems in the top 26 counties of Texas, board of the District Juvenile Probation and County Disaster Management chairperson. He is also a member of the Quitaque Chamber of Commerce, board of County Appraisal and the Task Force for Industrial & Tourism Development. He was also elected to be among the Outstanding Young Men of America by the United States Jaycees and was named Man of the Year.
President Ross and his wife, Velda, have three daughters, two sons-in-law and one granddaughter.

Ashok Mehta of Mumbai, India, was elected to serve as the 2005-2006 president of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association’s 88th International Convention in Hong Kong on July 1, 2005. President Mehta’s theme is “Passion to Excel.”
President Mehta, chairperson and managing director of a company in India, is actively associated with more than a dozen major medical, educational, welfare, social and cultural institutions.
A Lions member since 1963, President Mehta organized more than 30 eye camps all over India and Africa. He mobilized international support during major catastrophes, including earthquakes and super-cyclones in India. His peace mission to Pakistan, promoted by Lions of the two nations, added to the spirit of building bridges between the people of these countries.
President Mehta served on the Campaign SightFirst International Committee from 1990-95, collecting US$150 million for the project. He has also presented papers on sight conservation and other topics at Lions international forums and conventions.
Because of his outstanding leadership and contributions, President Mehta has received many awards including Lions clubs’ coveted “President’s Medallion” for the last 23 years, the Lions International Key Award and Medallion for sponsoring 250 new members and 19 extension awards for organizing new clubs. The Jaycees of Mumbai declared him “Man of the Year” in 1986. The government of Maharashtra appointed him to the Senate of Mumbai University where he served on committees for awareness and prevention, as well as Sheriff of Mumbai for a 1-year term in 2001. He was awarded an honorary doctoral degree in humanities from the University of the World in Missouri, USA.
President Mehta has participated in 24 Lions conventions, 14 USA/Canada Forums, 25 Africa forums and 5 Lions conferences in far eastern countries. He has been a member of the faculty at 10 District Governors-elect Schools and chairperson of the District Governors Orientation program at the 75th International Convention in Hong Kong.
President Mehta and his wife, Kokila, and daughter, Sheetal, are all progressive Melvin Jones Fellows.

Mahendra Amarasuriya of Colombo, Sri Lanka, was elected to serve as First vice president of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association’s 89th International Convention, held in Boston, USA June 30 to July 4th, 2006.
A member of the Galle Lions Club, Vice President Amarasuriya has held many offices within the association including district governor and international director. He has received the 100% District Governor Award, Extension Award and the 15 Year Perfect Attendance Award. He is currently a Trustee of the Eye Donation Society of Sri Lanka and is the Chair of the International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka.
In recognition of his service to the association, he has received numerous awards in recognition of his contribution to the association, including a Membership Award, Advanced Membership Award, Master Key Award, six International President’s Awards, 8 International President’s Certificates of Appreciation, the Leadership Award and the Ambassador of Goodwill Award, the highest honor bestowed upon association members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.
In addition to his Lions activities, Vice President Amarasuriya is the chair of a bank and three other companies in addition to being a member of the boards of many blue chip companies in Sri Lanka. A past chairperson of the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon and a past member of the Employees’ Trust Fund Board, he is also the chair of the National Agribusiness Council of Sri Lanka.
Vice President Amarasuriya resides with his wife Kushlani in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Albert F. Brandel 2nd International Vice President
Albert F. Brandel, of Melville, New York, USA, was elected to serve as second Vice President of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association's 89th International Convention, held in Boston, USA, June 30th to July 4th, 1993. Lion Brandel is a retired police detective.
A member of the West Hempstead Lions Club since 1975, and an associate member of the Melville Lions Club, Lion Brandel has held many offices in the association, including club president and district governor and has sponsored 42 new members. He has also served as a presenter and panelist at USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forums and worked with the Long Island Lions Eye Bank as a transporter. He has been the Lions Representative to UNICEF in New York for 10 years.
In recognition of his contributions, Lion Brandel has received numerous awards, including the 100% Club President Award, the 100% District Governor Award, the Supreme Extension Award, a 30 Member Key, 12 International President's Awards and Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest award the association grants to its members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.
In addition to his Lion activities, Lion Brandel has served as a Little League volunteer and is active in his church. He is a member of the board of directors of the United Nations Association of the USA.
Lion Brandel's wife, Dr. Maureen Murphy, an anesthesiologist and a Lion, is now practicing at a community hospital.
